FBI:
Cybercrime Rising

"Cybercrime is on the rise throughout
the United States, but many of those
attacks are not being reported to the
authorities."

"There is much more illegal and
unauthorized activity going on in cyberspace
than corporations admit to their clients,
stockholders and business partners, or
report to law enforcement."

"Many companies cite the fear of bad
publicity for their reluctance to alert
authorities, while others prefer not to
divulge any proprietary information to
investigators."

"The most serious financial losses from
cybercrimes occurred through theft of
proprietary information and financial
fraud -- $170 million and $115 million
respectively."  The total amount reportedly
lost to cybercrime last year was $459 Mil.

Less than half of the companies surveyed
could even quantify their financial losses
when they did admit to the loss.  Significantly,
a much higher percentage of companies
are reporting attempted hacking over the
Internet.

"78% of the companies surveyed said that
they had found that they suffered employee
abuse including pornography, pirating
software, and inappropriate use of email."
There was an overwhelming feeling that
the companies needed to screen their
employees more closely.  The employee
abuse losses amounted to $50 Mil.
